Scene: The Caspers' living room. Bob Casper is sitting on the chest center stage, smoking a cigarette. He is chain-smoking the entire scene.

There is a knock at the front door.

BOB looks to the kitchen, and then to the door.

There is another knock at the door.

Bob gets up and answers the door.

ADAM enters.

Bob shakes his head in surprise.

BOB: Adam! How are you? (calling into kitchen) Hey Laura! Adam's here! (to Adam, clapping his hand on his back) Come on in, take a load off.

ADAM: Thanks, Bob.

Adam sits on chair, stage right.

Bob walks over to kitchen and calls in.

BOB: Hey, Laura! I said Adam's here!

There is a pause.

Bob goes into kitchen (off stage) for a second, and then returns with a frying pan in his left hand.

BOB: That's strange; she was just there a second ago.

ADAM: It doesn't matter.

BOB: I can't stand that damn woman. She's never around when you expect her to be.

ADAM (looking slightly irritated): I said it doesn't matter.

Bob plops down into chair, stage left.

BOB: So, what's up, Adam? Everything all right down at the office?

ADAM: Everything's fine down at the office, Bob.

BOB: What's gotten into you, Adam? You don't seem your usual self today.

ADAM: No, I guess I'm not.

There is a long pause.

BOB: Would you like a cigarette?

ADAM: No.

There is a long pause, during which Bob seems somewhat uncomfortable.

BOB: Well, look, Adam, there's -

ADAM: I'm fucking your wife.

BOB: What?

ADAM: I'm fucking your wife.

There is a long pause.

BOB: How do you like it?

ADAM: I like it a lot.

Bob stands up and begins pacing around the room, behind the couch.

BOB: How long has this been going on?

ADAM: Two or three weeks.

BOB: You're not sure?

ADAM: What?

BOB: Is it two or three weeks?

ADAM: Three.

There is a long pause, while Bob paces and Adam sits staring at the chest.

BOB: So why tell me?

ADAM: Because I want to keep doing it.

BOB: I see.

ADAM: Laura doesn't want you any more.

BOB: Does she know you're here?

ADAM: No, I did this on my own.

Bob clocks Adam with the frying pan. Adam slumps forward on to the chest.

Bob pauses, and puts out his cigarette in the ashtray.

Suddenly Bob looks worried, and drops the frying pan on the couch. He takes the ashtray off the chest and opens it, pushing Adam back into the chair. Then he puts Adam in the chest and closes it, putting the ashtray back on the chest.

Bob sits on the chest, looking worried.
